Party, party ... (more pix)
A SquareCircles member jams with R.S. Murthi
We did another gig on Friday, Dec 19, at a private function ... a friend was celebrating his 50th birthday. Good too see our song, ISA Blues, get such a positive response ... if you're wondering what the song is about, come to our next gig. :)
The party was held at The Nerve, near KL's Heritage Row ... and those jamming included Carbolic Smokeballs, poet/songwriter Meor, Kamasutra, R.S. Murthi and others.
More pix soon.

Just a serious idea ...
I'm looking to form a pool of acoustic-electric singing-songwriting acts, for showcases and other gigs.
Can be solo, or band. Instruments can be a mix of acoustic and electric, but preferably no drums. Percussions are fine. This way, it's easier to do gigs almost anywhere, with easier set up and controlled volume.
Must be original material. No music or language boundaries, anything goes, so long as its your own stuff in the language of your choice.

About our music
Gig: For The Rawk Dawgs IV
Date: Nov 8, 8.30
Venue: VR1 Cafe, Damansara Intan, Petaling Jaya
Entry: RM15
Someone asked me what sort of music we play .... well, a bit of this and a lot of that ... you might think we're a country band, and then you might think we're a psychedelic folk-pop band, and then again, you might think we're a fusion act or blues outfit. Any which way you try to label us, you're probably just one or two songs away - or removed - from the truth.
Our songs, all our own, are about the times we live in, and sometimes, times past ... irony, sardony, parody ... these are words we like!
Our guest set this Saturday will comprise five songs, one of them instrumental. At the time of writing, I've decided to plug my nylon-string guitar into a chorus pedal to mask the horrible ineptness of my playing. Lohan has decided to use an electric guitar for most of the songs because he "heard it calling in his head." Kevin will stick with acoustic bass, electrified (the bass, that is). Krishna's tabla, we will amplify beyond all proportion with microphones, for the gig (details below).
If you shout and sing with us, perhaps a good time will be had by all. Me, I'm looking forward to hear those rippling dawgs that come on after we're done and packed.

The story, for now at least ...
A word or seven about SquareCircles:
Don’t get us wrong, we’re really not a “political” band! But events of 2008 have forced politics into the lives of all Malaysians.
So and thus, how could we possibly prevent political topics from insinuating themselves into our songs? Ultimately, we just rode the tsunami, took our observations of life as it is in Malaysia these days ... and put them in our songs.
We’re not a protest band, heck no, we’re too intimidated by the very thought of doing anything that requires getting the attention of the man. We figure, though, that things are worth a laugh or two, so that we all don’t get too carried away by events.
The serious battles for freedom of expression and human rights, we’ll leave it to conscientious journalists, activists and NGOs. We just want you to pay us for having our bit of fun, because this is what SquareCircles is all about.
If you have fun, too, consider it money well spent.
Why an acoustic band, you ask? Well, Bob Dylan had a good start with this, for one ...
SquareCircles was formed in October 2008, and comprises Sujesh (nylon-string guitar, vocals), Lohan (steel-string guitar, dobro, Malboro, backing vocals and foil to vocalist), Kevin The Loon (acoustic-electric bass, backing vocals, wicked chops) and Krishna (tabla, invisibility cloak).
We’re not sure how long this will last, and if it does, how regular the line-up will be ... all we can say is, if you see us perform in the future, then we’re obviously still around.
Our first gig is on Nov 8. Stay tuned for details. And a photo or two. Till then, ride with the wind.
